Didn't know that, thankyou for updating me. Regards, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 11:57, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Geobox/type/nature

[edit]

I'm looking for someone to help with {{Geobox/type/nature}}, as User:Caroig appears to have left the project. The problem is that the template has provisions for "Landmarks" and Rivers, but none for Mountains and Lakes. In the Adirondack Park article, I am presently using Landmarks for both mountains and lakes, but it would clearly be preferable to have separate entries for them. Is this something you can help with? If not, do you know where best to take this request? TIA, -- Mwanner | Talk 14:29, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Try this. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 14:49, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick response. I'm puzzled, though-- it looks like mountains and lakes are being made a sub-case of Landmarks, rather than a separate class like Rivers. Granted, the code leaves me crosseyed, so I could be missing something. Thanks again, -- Mwanner | Talk 15:09, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, my proposal puts them on the same level as landmarks, rivers and buildings. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 15:16, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Thanks again. -- Mwanner | Talk 15:28, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In case you missed it, this was implemented by User:L'Aquatique, and works just fine! Many thanks! -- Mwanner | Talk 21:31, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Co-ordinates

[edit]

Aaah, that's how you do it. I couldn't find how to put co-ordinates near the title. Now I do, thanks to your edit to Birmingham Northfield. Cheers for that :) doktorb wordsdeeds 19:09, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My pleasure. There's documentation at {{coord}}. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 20:32, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

for helping clear out the backlog at the TfD holding cell. Much appreciated, especially since I've done a couple of those infobox conversion ones and therefore know what a giant pain they are to do! delldot ∇. 21:02, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your comment on the AfD

[edit]

is better suited to the article's talk page, where it also is. I would appreciate it if you removed it from the AfD, since it is of little relevance there and is only likely to confuse things. Serendipodous 10:49, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So long as the use of colour is being used to justify one side of the AfD debate; my comment is relevant there. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 11:15, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The AfD article also uses colour-coding, albeit for different reasons. What's true of one is true of the other. Ergo your comment is meaningless as regards deciding whether one has an advantage. Serendipodous 13:06, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Linear" coorodinates for Monarch's Way

[edit]

Hi, I've seen your attempts to develop a method(s) for linear coordinates - but I don't really understand how or what is best... A "coord missing|United Kingdom" tag was recently added by a bot to Monarch's Way & I think the linear coords is probably what is needed - but the path is twisted & loops round on itself - so I think it would be a real challenge. If you had any ideas of the best way to tackle this that would be great (NB more details of points on the route are on the talk page where we are currently trying to expand the article).— Rod talk 11:34, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's an interesting, and somewhat extreme case. I would start to build a table of features, stating with the two end points, and adding main crossings or diversions and see how that grows. It might be best to do that on a sandbox page. It is almost certainly not possible to identify a single representative point, so feel free to remove the recently added template. Biographical metadata

[edit]

Are you interested in the debates on biographical metadata? I thought you might be interested in Wikipedia:Biographical metadata (would you be able to summarise what the microformats do for biographical stuff?) and also in the question I posed about gender metadata here. I was surprised to see that Wikipedia:Persondata doesn't include gender. Do the microformats include it? I also came across Freebase (eg. here) and the tables of information presented there look quite well done. Do you recognise the fields they are using there? Carcharoth (talk) 02:19, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A good piece of work; thank you. I have added some stuff about microformats, and will reply to your other points on the talk page there, in order that the conversation is not fragmented. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 09:59, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've also expanded Wikipedia:Metadata - I'm sure there are loads of other "metadata" projects, though I take rather a loose definition of metadata, sometimes including what would be more properly termed data. I tend to think of metadata as any information that can be usefully extracted and manipulated by external processes. That might end up covering rather a lot. If you have any thoughts on the best way for the Wikipedia:Metadata page to develop, that would be good. I note there isn't a talk page over there yet... Carcharoth (talk) 13:34, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
? The link to Wikipedia:Age calculation templates was meant to cover that. Also, {{BirthDeathAge}} seems to be the template that covers the functionality of the others, though how tidily that has been set up, and whether merging is possible, or how widespread the use is, I don't know. Carcharoth (talk) 15:14, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was commenting on the latter's talk page, about its deficiencies, as you wrote that! Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 15:16, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can't believe you meant to delete so much of this article (Syd Barrett), accordingly I've reverted your edit. Care to take another look at it? Cheers. --Rodhullandemu 20:51, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed not; goodness knows what happened, there, Thanks for letting me know; I've now reverted to your last edit, which was my original intention. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 21:21, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted

[edit]

Hi Andy. I rollbacked back your revision to the {{Locate me}} template. There is no consensus for the new one, so the old could not be "deprecated" (your only comment). BTW, please also use an edit summary. cygnis insignis 13:55, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

{{Locate me}} was deprecated some time ago, in favour of {{coord missing}}, but no-one marked it as such. Edit summary was here. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 15:22, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Niki Evans

[edit]

Niki Evans. I do not know what you are talking about regarding references. There is nothing anywhere as accurate as her own website. If you want to challenge something please do - and I will then perhaps better understand your problem. Regards, Robinventa —Preceding unsigned comment added by Robinventa (talkcontribs) 15:43, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please see WP:V and WP:BIO. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 15:49, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that info - as you realise I am new to all this. I will see what I can do to find something that is accurate. So many external references to Niki contain inaccurate information. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Robinventa (talkcontribs) 16:05, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I find it impossible to add an image to Niki's page. As far as I can tell I am doing everything everybody else does to achieve what I am attempting - but without success. I must ask therefore if you blocking, or in some other way stopping me from doing this. Any help/info appreciated. Regards Robinventa (talk) 11:18, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not only would I not want to block you from doing so, but I have no way of doing so. Indeed, if you look at my last edit to that page, I tried to fix it for you. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 11:20, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And have now done so. However, your claim of a license for that image may need to be substantiated. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 11:23, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You will understand that I was only asking the question because I do not understand the full scope of the sophisticated tools on Wikipedia. Thanks so much for you help - you are a gentleman and a scholar. Robinventa (talk) 12:06, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed an "inline citation" message. As you will see I have cleaned up everything as best I can - and added external links that support the text - eg. the fact that Niki was with John Barrowman at the Birmingham Symphony Hall is supported by a page from his site. Do you suggest that this link should be put with Barrowman in the text? Regards Robinventa (talk) 09:01, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, otherwise it's not clear which fact(s) in the article that link confirms. You're doing a good job, but I suggest you look at a few featured articles (from the home page) to see how such things are usually done. You can edit them without saving, to see the source code. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 15:16, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that - I have investigated what "inline citation" actually means and looks like - and have successfully tested my ability to do it. So - it is in the pipeline Robinventa (talk) 18:27, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

However, it is not acceptable to simply remove the template (nor to restore deleted, inappropriate, external links); especially with a misleading edit summary, as you did here. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 17:07, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey - I don't deserve that! I removed nothing - one minute I saw a message - the next time I looked it was gone. But I did nothing - certainly not deliberately. I had no idea where it had gone. Regarding the external links to YouTube, I thought your insistence of citation was a suggestion that they were put as a reference rather than a link in the text. The only indisputable confirmation that Niki ever made that record is the track on YouTube! I accept that, with hindsight, the edit summary could have been more accurate - that was a bit lazy - but I did not realise that it held such importance. As a novice to all this I appreciate all your help - but I think I deserve a bit more understanding. I am doing my best. If that proves not to be good enough I will clear off and let somebody else have a go.Robinventa (talk) 18:27, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is irrefutable evidence, linked-to above, that you did so. However, I am quite prepared to accept that you may have done it inadvertently. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 18:46, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have added inline citations as you suggested. I do like the reflist. Anyway - as you have been kind enough to help throughout, I would ask if you would have a look at what I have done. If I find better references, existing ones will be replaced - or new references added. And additional text will not be included without inline citation. I can do no more - and would ask you to please remove the templates you have put on this site. Regards Robinventa (talk) 11:22, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Good work. Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 11:27, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As you will have guessed, I am trying to bring this article up to a standard that compares favourably with other singers / performers on Wikipedia. I have noticed, looking at other sites, that their images have lettering above and below on a mustard background. Niki's image does not. Is there a reason for this? Regards Robinventa (talk) 13:32, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They use a template, {{Infobox Musical artist}}; see, for example, Roy Harper. If you wish to use the same template, it is most important that you set the "background" property to "solo_singer". Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 18:57, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Once again - many thanks Robinventa (talk) 22:30, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was going to build Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates/Archive 22, but when I went into the talk page to copy and paste out the inactive conversations, I saw "DO NOT ARCHIVE" in hidden comments.
